About SQUILT Music Appreciation

SQUILT (Super Quiet UnInterrupted Listening Time) was created by Mary Prather and is built around the Charlotte Mason principle of daily exposure to great music. Each 15-20 minute lesson pairs a curated musical piece with a listening map, composer biography, and guided discussion questions that help students notice elements like tempo, dynamics, instrumentation, and mood — actively listening rather than just passively hearing.

The program is available as individual volumes covering specific composers, eras, the orchestra, and holiday themes, or as a membership unlocking the full library plus live monthly classes with Mary. Lessons are genuinely multi-age — younger children follow simplified listening maps and coloring pages while older students complete notebooking work and deeper analysis, making it easy for families to do one lesson together.

What Families Love

  • Genuinely no music background needed — listening maps and guided questions do the instructional work.
  • Multi-age design lets the whole family do one lesson together, with age-appropriate follow-up activities.
  • 15-20 minute lessons fit easily into morning time or any homeschool schedule.
  • Individual volumes let families try it affordably before committing to a membership.
  • Strong Charlotte Mason alignment — makes structured music appreciation feel natural and unhurried.

Things to Consider

  • Music appreciation only — doesn’t teach theory, notation, or how to play an instrument.
  • Individual volumes can add up if buying several; the membership is better value for families wanting broad access.
  • Live class component (membership only) requires attending at scheduled times, though recordings are available after.
  • Best suited to preschool through middle school; older students may want a more in-depth music history program.
