Sonlight is a literature-based Christian curriculum founded in 1990 by John Holzmann, built around the idea that history, geography, Bible, and language arts are best learned together through real books rather than separate textbooks. Programs are organized into “Cores” (also called HBL — History/Bible/Literature), each centered on a historical period or theme, with a detailed Instructor’s Guide providing daily schedules, discussion questions, and teaching notes.
Sonlight is intentionally Protestant in orientation but doesn’t shy away from including books by non-Christian authors or presenting more than one view on contested topics — including offering both young-earth and old-earth perspectives on origins, with parent notes to help guide the discussion either way. Math and science can be added on, but the heart of the program is the daily read-aloud experience, often called “couch time” by the company itself.
