About Music in Our Homeschool

Music in Our Homeschool was built by Gena Mayo, a music teacher with degrees in Music Education and Vocal Pedagogy and a homeschool mom of eight, who wanted to make music genuinely achievable for busy families with no musical background. The platform offers 15-minute video lessons covering music appreciation, composers by era, world music, American music, theory, and instrument basics like guitar and ukulele.

The MIOH+ membership comes in a Basic tier and a fuller Plus tier, with the Plus including monthly live music appreciation lessons, monthly painting tutorials, fine arts pages, and access to a much larger course library. Individual courses can also be purchased separately without a membership. Both secular and Christian-friendly courses are available, and some courses are specifically designed to count toward high school fine arts credit.

What Families Love

  • Genuinely no prep and no music background needed — Gena does all the teaching.
  • 15-minute lessons fit easily into any homeschool schedule.
  • Wide range of courses spanning appreciation, theory, history, and instruments.
  • Both secular and faith-friendly course options, so families choose what fits.
  • Some courses designed to count toward high school fine arts credit.

Things to Consider

  • The volume of courses can be overwhelming — families benefit from a plan before diving in.
  • Basic and Plus tiers have meaningfully different content access — worth reading the tier comparison carefully before subscribing.
  • Live class components require attending at scheduled times, though recordings are available after.
  • Individual course purchases add up compared to the membership if buying several.
