About Horizons Phonics & Reading

Horizons Phonics & Reading is Alpha Omega Publications’ early reading curriculum for grades K–3, sold as its own subject set separate from the rest of the Horizons line. Each grade set includes two student workbooks, two illustrated companion readers, and a teacher’s guide.

Lessons teach spelling, alphabetizing, rhyming, sentence structure, and word recognition through a time-tested, phonics-based approach, with the companion readers giving students real practice applying what they’ve just learned.

Best for families wanting a structured, teacher-led phonics program with colorful, engaging materials for early readers, especially those already using other Horizons subjects.

Why Families Choose It

Time-Tested Phonics Method

A structured, phonics-first approach to early word recognition and reading.

Built-In Readers

Companion readers let kids apply new phonics skills right away.

Sold Separately

Easy to pair with a different math curriculum if Horizons Math isn’t the right fit.

What Families Love

  • Structured, phonics-first approach builds strong early readers.
  • Bright, colorful workbooks and readers hold young learners’ attention.
  • Includes matching readers, so decoding practice is built right in.
  • Sold as its own subject, so it’s easy to pair with other curricula.

Things to Consider

  • Faith-based content, general Christian framework (nondenominational Protestant, Alpha Omega).
  • Requires daily, hands-on parent instruction — not an independent study program.
  • Print-only — no digital option.
  • Only covers K–3 — families need another program for reading beyond that.
