About Christian Light Education (CLE)

Christian Light Education (CLE) is a division of Christian Light Publications, a Mennonite non-profit founded in 1969 and based in Virginia, producing curriculum that reflects a conservative Mennonite, Anabaptist framework. Rather than large textbooks, CLE breaks each subject into short, consumable workbooks called “LightUnits” — students complete each numbered booklet, answer questions directly inside it, then move to the next, making progress genuinely easy to track.

First graders begin with Learning to Read LightUnits before moving into the five core strands (Bible, Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies), which continue through 12th grade. CLE is frequently described as one of the most independent-work-friendly curricula available, especially at the elementary and middle school level, which makes it popular with larger families managing several children. Its math program in particular has a strong following among homeschoolers independent of the rest of the curriculum.

Best for Christian families wanting an affordable, complete K-12 curriculum with strong academic rigor, especially those managing multiple children who need students to work with real independence.

Why Families Choose It

Genuinely Independent

Bite-sized LightUnits let students work with real independence.

Easy to Track Progress

Each completed workbook is clear, documented learning.

Strong, Standalone Math

Popular even with families not using the rest of the CLE system.

What Families Love

  • Genuinely independent-work-friendly, freeing up significant parent time.
  • Bite-sized LightUnits make progress easy to see and track.
  • Affordable relative to many other complete K-12 Christian curricula.
  • Strong, well-regarded math program that’s popular even outside the full CLE system.
  • Optional Homeschool Plus program available for families wanting formal counseling, transcripts, and diplomas.

Things to Consider

  • Faith-based content, conservative Mennonite/Anabaptist framework woven throughout every subject, not just Bible.
  • Bible Translations Used: KJV.
  • Workbooks can feel repetitive or dry for students who prefer more variety in format.
  • Some LightUnits ask questions before fully explaining how to solve them, which a few families find frustrating without extra parent support.
  • Not a fit for secular families, or Christian families who prefer a curriculum that more closely reflects their own denomination or theological tradition.
