Build Your Library (BYL) was created by Emily Cook, a secular homeschool veteran and co-founder of SEA Homeschoolers, who spent years adapting other curricula before building her own explicitly secular, literature-based program. Each of the 13 levels (K through 12) follows a chronological historical timeline using living books — engaging, well-written literature rather than dry textbooks — with narration, copywork, dictation, nature study, and artist/composer study woven throughout.
The PDF lesson plans are affordably priced and lay out a four-day instructional schedule with a fifth catch-up/enrichment day, but families source the actual books themselves — either through libraries or by purchasing them. This keeps the base cost low but requires planning and access to a good library system or a real book budget.
One note: some levels use Story of the World as a history spine, which has occasional chapters with religious cultural content presented in an academic context — worth previewing for families with strict secular preferences.
