Analytical Grammar, developed by Robin Finley and Erin Karl and now published by Demme Learning, teaches grammar through a rigorous, mastery-focused approach built around sentence diagramming and structured, sequential lessons. Rather than reviewing grammar all year long, the program front-loads intensive instruction, then shifts to biweekly reinforcement exercises for the rest of the school year, once a student demonstrates real understanding.
The curriculum spans five self-contained levels, starting as early as grade 4 with Grammar Basics and moving through Mechanics, Parts of Speech, Phrases & Clauses, and finally Punctuation and Usage — designed so a student who completes all five levels has a genuinely thorough grammar foundation for high school. Tests are open-note by design, intended to reduce anxiety and encourage students to actually use their notes as reference, and “shoulder-to-shoulder” grading (working through answers together rather than simply marking wrong) is part of the program’s philosophy.
